Now, in this blog, we are going to talk about the 4 different vocal registers that you can use. This joins on from last week’s blog where we spoke about the three different voice categories. So, just to really quickly recap those three different categories for both males and females, let’s start with the females firstly…

So now, let’s talk about the four different vocal registers that you can use as a singer when you are singing. Let’s start from the top to down regards to placement of the sound in your body.
Falsetto – is the first and highest vocal register. Falsetto means “false” chords when singing up high. You will sound very high and light singing anything in this area. It resonates around the top area of your head. For males, this is going to make you sound like a girl.
Head voice – is the second vocal register. It is the lighter, airier, weaker sounding version of your true voice. Now, I have had a lot of different teachers in my time and and I’ll a lot would say that head voice and falsetto are the same thing – but THEY ARE NOT!! Falsetto is “false” while head voice is the lighter, airier, weaker sounding area of your true voice.
True Voice – or what I call in my classes the middle register which is your firmer or true voice. Most singing is done on this middle register.
Chest register – the very last vocal register. When you are predominantly singing in your lower chest. Your chest will resonate and vibrate when you’re singing down in this area. So, when you start doing scales or singing very low put your hand on your chest, you should feel the sound resonate in your chest and hand.
So, they are the four different voice categories that you can use as a singer. Please try to incorporate these into the songs that you are singing and also listen out for and feel these different registers. So, when you are practicing your songs, listen to the songs. Hear what the artist is doing and what voice category you think they are singing in and try to sing in that register if you can. This is going to greatly help you out to present the song a whole lot better.
