What I need you to do firstly is you need to jump on line, read through the contracts and different criteria. Different shows have different criteria so please read through it very carefully and follow these instructions because if you don’t, you may ruin your chance to audition.
Jump on line and register, read the fine print, sign your life away, if you’re happy with that, what I need you to do now is pick your 4 to 10 best songs that you can sing really really well. You want to show off your voice, the best components of your voice. So if you can cry, sing high, sing low or in falsetto, sing belt, quiet or loud – you need to show these different components off as quickly as you possibly can.
As a general rule, you need to learn a verse and a chorus of the songs. Because the judges haven’t got the time to listen to the whole song through. The other this is please do not get disappointed if you do not audition to one of the celebrity judges. Generally, the first audition will be to the producers or a panel of unknown judges. So you might not go to the celebrity judges straightaway so please be aware of that.
With the songs you choose – you want to pick out different and contrasting songs. So for example if your best song is a ballad, a slower song. Your second song should be contrasting, so a faster song. If you’re first song is a low song, your second should be a higher song. So make sure you are contrasting your songs and even better, contrasting genres as well. If you’re a rock singer, try to maybe do a pop song or an RnB song if you can do this well. Please do not do songs that you do not do well, only pick out songs you can do well! You want to show off everything you’ve got within your voice and range quickly.
Acapella – as a general rule, you will sing these songs acapella. Acapella means unaccompanied, meaning no backing tracks or instruments. The great thing about singing acapella is:
Make sure you do songs that are current hits in the charts – so this means the song was released within the last year. So pick current hits that are in the charts.
Learn these songs a hundred and ten percent – a hundred percent is not good enough.
Now you’ve got your main 4 to10 best songs down, because they might get you to sing more than two for the very first audition and if you get a call back on the day, you’ll going to sing new songs. So please have at least 10 songs ready to go.
Rehearse – rehearse, rehearse, rehearse at home, rehearse every day! So you’re going to rehearse it until it is hundred and ten percent. Rehearse exactly what you’re going to do, exactly what you’re going to say and dress exactly the way you’re going to dress on the day.
Dress for success – please dress in something you feel comfortable in but also something that looks great as well.
Be prepared – it’s going to be a long day, there will be thousands of people auditioning. You’re not going to walk in and just audition straightaway, there might be line with thousands of other singers. So stay hydrated. Bring water and snacks for the day.
Right before your audition – warm your voice up, have a good sing, get prepared and go in there, Have fun, just be yourself, and do the best that you can. And if you don’t get through, don’t be too hard on yourself because there were hundreds and thousands of people that haven’t got through. Please remember the main thing here is have fun and if you did your best you are already a winner anyway.
