How To Sing

We’re going to be over the 4 most important components of the voice to make you sing a lot better quickly. We’re going to be using the metaphor of a car to explain these four components.

  • THE EAR – Yes, you might be very surprised about that the ear is number one. Putting it simply if you are not singing in key, you’re going to be sounding bad. So the steering wheel of the car is the same for your ear as a singer. If you’re hands are not on the steering wheel, you will not have Control of the car; if you’re not listening up to the key of the song or the chords that are being played, you’ll going to be singing out of key and not sounding great. So please always listen to the chords that are being played in music and also the chords that are being played when you’re doing scales as this is going to greatly improve your ear.
  • THE DIAPHRAGM – you’re diaphragm is the engine of the car. Without an engine you ain’t going anywhere. We need to breathe properly through your diaphragm. The diaphragm supports and puts the right amount of air underneath the vocal cords all the time so that you’re hitting the right pitch.
  • THE MOUTH – you’re mouth and tongue do all the articulation, pronunciation and diction. Now if you’re not using this properly, it’s not going to sound great. Your mouth has to move to the different vowel mouth placements – that is the exhaust pipe of the car.
  • THE VOCAL CORDS – This is just the sound of the car, the way that it sounds as it drives by is your voice. Everyone and every car has a different sound. Your vocal cords just sit there and get air push through them and vibrate at a different frequency to hit the right key. So, just keep them relaxed, left air flow through them and have fun.

So, that is the four most important component of the voice when you are singing.

A couple of other points that I wanted to give you to make you a great singer are…

  • Please pick songs out that you thoroughly enjoy singing – do not sing a song that you do not like. Life is too short, you need to have fun with what you are doing.
  • Pick out keys of songs that best suit your voice – You should know what voice you are. If you’re male, (bass, baritone or tenor) if you’re female (soprano, alto or contralto). You should know what type of voice you are so that you’ll pick out songs that best suit your voice and range.
  • Copy what the greats did or are doing – The Beatles, first two albums were both predominantly covers, The Rolling Stones first album was all cover songs except for one original composition. Sing along of your favorite artists, learn of what these guys are doing and then try to go and do it better.
  • Learn the melodies and lyrics 110% of the song – That’s right! Because a hundred percent is not good enough because you have to learn both the lyrics and the melody. You can learn the lyrics a 110% but if you’re melody is no good, your presentation is not going to be great.
  • Sing with feeling – you have to feel every word that you are singing. Not every line, not every chorus or every verse but I want you to believe every word that you’re singing.

So, if you have followed  what I have pointed out here, you’re well on your way to becoming a great singer!
