In this blog, we’re going to be talking and discussing placement of sounds makes all the difference in your vocal presentation when singing a song.
So, let’s talk about placements. Yes, sounds can be placed in different registers and you can feel these different registers whether they be in your chest, neck or head. I am going to be discussing and talking about that a little bit later on in this blog.
We have the first and foremost talk about the emotion of the song. Whether you’re writing your own song or singing someone else’s song, you must feel what the emotion is. “Let it be” for instance by The Beatles – it’s a sad song, it’s about hope and about things getting better in the future so, Paul McCartney was singing in a nice smooth even voice. Now, as we know Paul McCartney did belt out songs like Helter Sketer. He sung “let it be” differently to “helter-skelter”. Singing Helter skelter very aggressively compare Let it be which was done smoothly. But Paul McCartney in “Let it be” is singing in a nice tone, he’s not singing it aggressively like a rock song. He is singing it light and ballad like an RnB song because that’s the emotions that Paul McCartney wanted to express when he was singing that song. Then again on the other hand, if you’re going to sing an aggressive song or whatever it may be, sing it in that emotion. For instance, Alanis Morissette in the song “Ironic”, she’s singing it very lively because that’s what she wanted to express in that chorus. She doesn’t want to sing it light as she wanted to express that anger or that feel about being anxious or angry or whatever it may be that she wants to express in the song. So again, get to the feel of the song and express yourself and your voice the way that you want to express it within the emotion of the song.
Now let’s talk quickly about some different registers, placements and where they’re placed within your body. Let’s start at the very highest point in the head so we’re going to start with falsetto. Just to start here, let’s play the chord of F above middle C, so these are the same five notes and let’s go through five registers within the body to explain these different sounds.
• Falsetto – resonating at the very top of head on a ‘wee’ in false voice.
• Head voice – resonating around the upper half of your face and is a lighter airy sound.
• Middle register or true – resonating around the lower half of your face, chin, and upper neck that shows strength and thickness of the voice.
• Throat register – drop the sound on down the throat a little bit and produce husky/dirty sound.
• Chest register – a classical chest bello sound, you should feel more vibration around your lower neck, chest and sternum.
So, I’v just giving you an example of the five different vocal registers that you can pick for any emotion that you may want to express within your singing. So, play around with those different registers and use which one you think is most appropriate in the song that you are singing.
I’m going to leave you with one last point here, sing where it feels natural and it sounds the best. So, if it feels good, it will generally sound good.
