In this blog, we’re going to be discussing and talking about a very commonly asked question especially by beginners and intermediate singers – how long will it be until I am sounding better or a better singer?
The answer to this is purely and simply up to yourself and how much work and dedication you put into your singing. If you are not practicing much, say one or two days a week you’re not going to see much improvement in your voice. If you don’t practice your scales, your songs and your performance most days, you won’t make a lot of improvement.
On top of that, quality practice is far more important than quantity. I’d rather you do ten minutes of quality practice than an hour of rushed practice or doing other things while you are practicing. So focus and quality is very important when you are practicing your scales and singing.
The four main areas that singers have to look at for when they are practicing if you want to become a better singer are:
1. Is the/your ear – it is alerting you when you are in or out of key, pitch and singing the right or wrong notes. This IS the cardinal rule.
2. The diaphragm – this supports the right amount of breath pressure/air underneath the vocal cords making you sound great all the time.
3. The mouth – this is the articulator of your sound. If you don’t use your mouth when you’re singing, you’re not going to sound great. You’re got to get your mouth working to the correct vowel mouth placements all the time. (please check out our past blogs regarding mouth placements and vowels)
4. The larynx/voice box – this actually makes the sound. Your larynx gets air push through it and vibrates in different frequencies, intervals and pitch to make sound. Keep your larynx relaxed at all times.
In the above four areas, some areas are easier and harder to train than others. Some of these areas you may already have down pat like breathing that should be coming naturally with just a fine tune to teach you to breathe through your diaphragm. So, that’s an area that most of my students already are doing naturally and are OK at before they even starts singing. Some areas are harder to train than others but please focus on the areas that you think that you’re not as strong in. And again, if you’re not progressing – get professional help.
A big point when practicing to become a better singer is look at yourself in the mirror – look at your form, look at your mouth, neck and your breathing. Observe what you’re doing, hear the sound, look at your mouth; neck; shoulders; think about it and try to fix it.
Another great tip is, record yourself – record yourself doing scales and singing. You may be recording yourself through your phone, your computer or wherever it may be. But remember if you are recording your voice you may not be coming out that well when you’re not in a professional recording studio where you may sound a lot better with proper recording equipment. And also go back and listen to it two or three weeks down the track and you’ve want to be hearing the improvements.
The bottom line is practice as much as you can but do not strain your voice – in a couple of weeks, you should be feeling stronger if you just started lessons or doing scales, in a two to four weeks, you should be feeling the difference.
