VSA Blog - WHY IS MY SINGING NOT IMPROVING?

Are you already having singing lessons for quite a while, but still don’t feel confident in your abilities?

There are two reasons why that is.
1. You are not practicing effectively — or, maybe, not practicing enough, if at all.
2. Your singing teacher is not very good, and failed to give you exercises that are going to help you reach your goals.

Let's break this down, shall we?

Your singing teacher should be giving you singing exercises to practice – customised to your vocal needs and range. All of our students at VSA are expected to come back next week with different parts of the song or the scales improved. Your teacher should be working on the parts of your voice that you want to improve, and/or the teacher thinks needs improvement. You should be singing along with scales, and it for at least 10-25 minutes, at least 5 days a week — this is what we advise at VSA.

After doing your scales, you should be trying to implement the skills that you have learned directly into the song — so it is imperative that you sing an actual song after you do your scales. You should be looking at yourself in the mirror when you are singing and doing your scales at home. And if you are doing that for at least 5 days a week, you should be feeling stronger, more confident, higher or lower notes should be sounding better.

If you got a great teacher, he or she should be guiding you, advising you about what to do, how long to do it for, and should be picking you up on any parts of your voice that might need improving. Documenting these on your lyrics, so that you clearly know what you have to do during your home practice – that is what all our singing teachers do.

If you have lessons for months, and you don’t feel that your vocal ability has improved, I would be asking your singing teacher — "why haven’t I improved after a couple of months, I've followed all your instructions," — and if they don’t improve your voice for the next 3 or 4 weeks, I'd be definitely looking to find another vocal coach or an online singing course.

Hope that this has helped you out!

THE VOICE TRAINING SPECIALIST SINCE 1993

WHERE DO PROFESSIONAL SINGERS WARM UP?

Exclusive backstage footage of Clint Boge and Glenn Esmond of The Butterfly Effect warming up before a performance. Peter Vox is answering your questions! "Where do I warm up?" is one of the most common questions we receive at VSA.The answer is - ANYWHERE. I have filmed some exclusive footage of professional singers warming up before their show, and these guys are singing in the lounge and in the hallway of the venue. Do it in on your way to your class, rehearsal or show. Do it in the toilet, in the car park, in the car, on a train, in an office, rooftop, kitchen... I warmed up in all these places! And don't be scared to warm up absolutely anywhere, if you haven't got an exclusive dressing room."But I don't have time to warm up..."Yes, you do! You don't have to designate a specific time, if your day is busy. What about all that time we spend getting places? It is imperative that you warm your voice up, so you can properly prepare your voice to give the best professional show you possibly can - when you get to your venue, and up on that stage! It is a mark of professionalism, respect for your audience, and for your own voice. Only after a good warm-up you will sound your best, and will be safe! And remember - cooling down after each show is very important for vocal health, too! After you've been singing, always cool down. Sing quieter, hum, maybe do some gentle exercises and scales. A good teacher will always tell you, which exercises are great for cooking down, too, or help you develop a specific cool-down routine. All my students, especially professionals, follow their warm-up/cool-down regime!Hope you enjoy this clip of THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT warming up: Empowering Voices Since 1993!

VSA Blog - How to Find a Great Online Singing Teacher!

Finding the best possible vocal coach to suit your unique abilities and style is not always easy. Some people get lucky and find an excellent tutor on first try! Others go through a series of teachers and still can't decide - either it's a hit or miss, or simply not enough information to make a decision

Peter Vox to the rescue! He is the principal teacher and director at Vox Singing Academy, who has more than 25 years of singing teaching experience, and performed himself professionally as a vocalist for over 35 years now...

1.Write down a few words or goalsabout what you want to achieve from singing lessons. do you want to improve your vocal tone, confidence, vocal range, breathing, pitch, stamina, strength, technique, control, harmonies, vocal health, stage presentation

Do you want classical or contemporary lessons or courses? (the difference) Group or private classes (the difference)

2.Now you know what you want to achieve, do some research. This is similar to choosing a car or a university. This is an investment. And choosing the right singing teacher or singing course is going to save you a lot of time and money. Google what you were looking for, eg classical singing lessons, R&B singing lessons, children's singing lessons, adult singing lessons, Best singing lessons, read the reviews, read their website and see what they can offer you, ask friends or people in the music industry for their opinion and advice.

3.Now that you have done your research and narrowed down your choices to 2 or 3 singing schools. And now compare them to each other. Write down the pros and cons of each. If you have any questions have no hesitation to email or ring the School... The singing school: • Should Respond to you promptly and be extremely helpful. • Be willing and able to answer all of your questions. If they are unwilling or not prepared to answer your questions, do not go to that school. • All singing Schools should be guaranteeing there work and what services they are able to provide you with.

4.Now that you have chosen your desired online singing school. Book a lesson. See if the school offers a single trial lesson. To see whether you gel and get along with the teacher and give you a value-packed first lesson catering to your needs. At the completion of your first lesson, the teacher should have a full understanding of what you want to achieve from your lessons and know as much about you artistically so that they can help you sing better as quickly as they can.

You should receive a warm-up or skill scale/ scales played on piano with the teacher giving examples for you to practice at home that has been customised to your vocal range and genre of music.

The teacher should have been given you a practice regime regarding how long you should be doing scales and singing for every day. And finally what you need to prepare and what is expected of you in the next class.

You should finish your first class with the feeling of confidence that if you practice you should be feeling and sounding a lot better in the first month.

If you don't feel that you received or covered most of these points in the first lesson I would highly recommend another school or teacher.

I hope that this video has helped you out.

Enjoy your singing and bye for now!
