Don’t Grip The Top Of The Mic
We get it, it feels natural to wrap your hand around the whole microphone, but gripping the top (also known as “cupping the mic”) actually muffles your sound and can cause overdrive. Instead, hold the mic by the handle, just below the grille, to allow your voice to come through loud and clear. This also helps the sound technician get a cleaner mix and gives you a more professional appearance on stage.
Better To Be Too Close Than Too Far
Keep the mic about a fist away from your mouth. If you’re too far, your vocals will sound thin and distant. The quickest way to make your sound engineer an enemy, is forcing them to increase your mic gain because you’re holding it arms-length. That’s asking for feedback! Staying close ensures you maintain vocal presence, especially in louder environments or with a full band. It also helps capture the full richness and tone of your voice.

Keep It Horizontal, Not Vertical
Pointing the mic straight up into your nose isn’t doing your vocals any favors. Instead, angle it across your mouth as this helps reduce harsh breathing sounds and gives your audience a smoother, clearer tone. This positioning also minimizes popping sounds from plosive consonants like “P” and “B” and keeps the mic from blocking your face on stage or in videos.
Adjust For Louder Parts
Planning to hit some big, powerful notes? Gently pull the mic away as you get louder to avoid overwhelming the sound system. It’s a small adjustment that makes a huge difference in keeping your dynamics under control. With practice, this movement becomes second nature and helps keep your performance polished and balanced from start to finish.
Practice With A Mic (Or Even A Water Bottle!)
Mic technique isn’t something you magically master on stage. Practice regularly, even using a water bottle as a stand-in to build the muscle memory you’ll need when it really counts. It may seem silly, but it works! By incorporating mic work into your regular vocal practice, you’ll feel more confident and natural every time you perform.
