Hi there, today I will be writing about the art of control when holding single notes straight when singing. Here are a few of the BEST techniques and hints to help you hold notes precisely with control when singing a song or scale.
1.When you are holding a note, you have to have the right amount of air pressure support underneath your vocal cords to hold the note or notes at all times. So please make sure that you have enough air in your diaphragm to support the notes properly. If you don’t have the right amount of air pressure, the note is going to fall off, deflate or worse, sound flat. That’s the most important technique that you need to master if you’re going to hold a note straight for any period of time.
2. When you get to the last note of any phrase or scale (unless you are trilling, running or moving on the last note) try to hold the note as straight as possible at the end of the phrase or scale, by tightening the diaphragm/stomach muscles to
place correct breath pressure underneath the vocal cords so to hold the note straight and with control.

or accompany yourself on the piano, and hold a single note for three seconds or so. Play the note and sing it straight as you are doing this move your hand sideways in the air as if you were drawing a straight line in the air. This will give you a visualisation of a straight line with your voice and hand. When you are starting the 1st note, raise a little to the note so you’re not having an abrupt attack of the 1st note. When you are singing down lower in your singing register you’ll need less diaphragmatic support, though as you sing higher in your singing register you’ll need to tighten your diaphragm a lot more to hold a note straight and steady with control.
Doing some physical hand and arm movements or actions when singing your scales is great to do because this will give you a physical visualisation of what your voice needs to be doing. This will also help you out greatly with your hand movements and stage presence when you sing up on stage.
3. A few times a week try to do some core strengthening exercises such as bridges, planks, sit-ups or crunches. These exercises will greatly improve your singing and holding technique. Cardiovascular exercises such as running or swimming will also greatly improve your voice and lung capacity. The bigger your lung capacity and the more cardiovascularly fit you are the better it is for your singing.
After you have mastered the holding scale please try to incorporate them directly into your favourite songs that have sustained holding notes. Please remember to continually keep on practising every day and in a few short weeks, you should feel and hear improvement in your voice.

Last month I had a quick business/holiday trip over to KL Malaysia which was fantastic! It was great to get away from the winter in Melbourne and get some heat, humidity and sun.
I’m Super excited to be involved and running a workshop (Sing Like A Rock Star! Techniques To Improve Your Singing Fast!) at this year’s BIG SING festival. The first of its kind with a soirée of amazing teachers. The BIG Sing Festival is a day of professional immersive workshops for anyone and everyone who loves to/wants to sing.
I will be doing my best to check-in on Instagram live every alternate day to give you an insight on my day’s activities as I have had sometime away from doing this with my trip to Malaysia and I miss interacting with all of our followers.
