I hope that you all had a great May as we did at VSA!
May was an extremely busy month for me. Continually improving VSA’s procedures and training of all staff so that VSA will soon work autonomously so that I can focus on the online course and other projects that I have in the pipe works.

VSA had it’s student concert on Sunday 26th of May at The Palace Hotel in Camberwell that was a huge success as we had numerous new up-and-comers performing for the first time and more experienced singers taking there craft to the next level. I was very proud of everyone that performed at the student concert. And thank you to everyone that came down and supported the singers.

Today we’re going to talk about control when holding single notes straight. Here are a couple of hints to help you out with holding notes in a song.
When you are holding the note, you have to have the right amount of air pressure pushing up underneath the vocal cords to hold the note or notes at all times. So please make sure that you have enough air in your diaphragm to support the notes properly. If you don’t have the right amount of air pressure, the note is going to fall off, deflate and your going to sound flat. That’s the most important hint that you need to know if you’re going to hold a note.
When you get to the last note of any phrase or scale (unless you are trilling or moving on the last note) try to hold the note as straight as possible at the end of the phrase or scale, by tightening the diaphragm muscles to put more breath pressure underneath the vocal cords so to hold the note straight and with control.
Practicing any holding scales or will greatly help you out. Either jump on to the ultimate online singing course https://voxsingingacademy.com or ask your teacher for some holding scales. Or accompany yourself on the piano, and hold a single note for three seconds or so. Play the note and sing it straight as you are doing this move your hand sideways in the air as if you were drawing a straight line in the air. This will give you a visualization of a straight line with your voice and hand. When you are starting the 1st note, raise a little bit to the note so you’re not having an abrupt attack of the 1st note. When you are singing down lower in your register you’ll need less diaphragmatic support but as you sing higher in your register you’ll need to tighten your diaphragm a lot more to hold a note straight and steady.
Doing some physical hand movements or actions with your scales is a great thing because this will give you a physical visualization of what your voice needs to be doing. This will also help you out greatly with your hand movements and stage presentation up on stage.
A few times a week I would try to do some core strengthening exercises such as bridges, planks or crunches. These exercises will greatly improve your singing and holding techniques. Any cardiovascular exercises such as running or swimming will also greatly improve your voice.
After you have mastered the holding scale please try to go and incorporate this directly into some of your favorite songs that have sustained holding notes. Please remember to continually keep on practising every day and in a few short weeks, you should feel improvement your voice and control of notes.
