In February’s featured article Vox Singing Academy’s director Peter Vox will be diving in deep into a subject that is so very important! To be honest it is the 2nd most important skill to do with singing behind singing in key and pitch – you are going to be learning about vowels and the different mouth shapes to make you sound great.

Every single student within their singing lessons at Vox singing academy will always be given this scale and the five vowels separately because it is just so important to sounding great! The reason why it’s the 2nd most important is that 98% of the time when singing you are holding vowels. When you are singing you are just going from one vowel to the next and those vowels are joined together by syllables and consonants. And folks that’s all we’re doing when singing. If your mouth isn’t moving to the right mouth vowel mouth placements then you are not going to sound the best you possibly can. So, you have to practice the vowel scale that Peter Vox is about to give you and apply them, the vowels, into your songs. This vowel scale isn’t going to improve overnight. You will start to hear and feel improvement in about 5-7 weeks and then after this time subconsciously your mouth will start forming the right mouth shapes by themselves ultimately making you sound a lot better!
Peter Vox going to give you a scale that will help your mouth move to the right mouth placements for every vowel in every song. Before we start the scale, please kindly write in big letters on this piece of paper or take a photo or scan the vowel sounds and the corresponding mouth placements that I have written below.
This is a guide for you to follow at home as you are going through this particular scale. You are going to start down low, the rule that I want you to use in this scale for both males and females is the “less down low and more up top singing principal”. Meaning smaller mouth placements when you’re singing down low with less volume and diaphragmatic support and bigger mouth placements when you’re singing up higher with more volume and diaphragmatic support. Please always look into the mirror when singing and doing all scales but especially this one as you want to closely monitor what your mouth is exactly doing for each Vowel.
Sing each Vowel separately one after themselves whilst playing five single notes in a row.
• SOUND – MOUTH SHAPE
• AIR – Relaxed in the lower range, Small smile in the higher range
• SEE – Round in the lower range, Small smile in the higher range
• HEART – Open in the lower range, Smile in the higher range
• SOUL – Open in the lower range, Oval in the higher range
• YOU – A small smile to relaxed puckered lips
Alternate each one of these vowels separately on a single note on the piano or just sing them a-cappella within your vocal range. Starting down in the lower part of your vocal range and work your way up into your higher vocal range. Do not rush the scale and make sure that you are going to the correct mouth placements for every vowel. Singing them separately and stopping in between every vowel. Remembering that every vowel has a different mouth shape. Please remember to make your mouth placements more relaxed and smaller in the lower part of your range and larger and more exaggerated placements in the higher part of your range. When done correctly the scale will greatly improve your tone and sound as a singer.

It was an affirmation of bands success with many of the songs receiving heavy radio play, creeping the bands name up festival bills over the world, selling out bigger venues than the band had ever before and eventually lead them to support Foo Fighters and play Australia’s inaugural Download festival.
2019 has seen the band release their fourth studio offering ‘Nature/Nurture’, which caught the ears of punk heavyweight Fat Wreck Chords, making them the second Australian band ever to sign to the esteemed label. ‘Nature/Nurture’ debuted at #6 in the Australian ARIA charts, has been dubbed “their strongest record yet” by Stack Magazine and is fast becoming their most streamed record!
Nature / Nurture was nominated for the 2019 ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock album.
2019/2020 has seen Clowns tour Europe and America. Clowns will also be supporting My Chemical Romance at Download Festival 2020 in Australia.
