Have you been trying your best, practicing, but just can’t seem to get this beautiful high note? Ever felt your throat tighten up, and only produce that cracking, straining sound?

The number one tip that I wanted to give you is: as you are starting to sing up higher, tighten your stomach muscles. If you know some diaphragmatic breathing techniques, I highly recommend that you do these – breathe in with your diaphragm, using your core muscles. And the higher that you sing in true voice, the stronger your stomach muscles should be, and air pressure should be firmer underneath your vocal cords. But coming not from your throat – from your core. Flex that tummy!

Another tip that I can give you is: when you sing, look into the mirror. If your neck is tightening up as you are going up higher, you will be able to see it straining – that is a sign for you to tighten your stomach more, and relax your neck.

Also, keep your posture straight. Neither put your head up, nor push your neck forward. Try to keep your posture relatively straight – not military-straight, just a nice, relaxed, straight, confident posture.

As you are singing up higher, let the sound of your voice resonate towards the back of the head. Don’t push your voice down into your throat as you are going up higher. A lot of people envision the voice, and feel that their voice is on the throat – and it’s going to stay there. But just let the voice go back and to sound more feminine. As the voice resonates in the back of your head, you will notice that in sounds lighter, but is still able to go up higher.

Now, if your voice is cracking and breaking, generally it is because it’s probably going over to falsetto. So your voice is switching really fast between the two registers. What I highly recommend if you’re singing a song that is basically too high for you, possibly sing the song that is in a slightly lower key, so that your voice won’t crack, and you should be able to feel when your voice is about to go up into that falsetto area, don’t go up into that area and do that particular crack in your voice. You can feel it as you go higher through a scale or through a song, you know when your voice is going to crack so don’t go up that high and bring the song down lower, or pick a song that is in a better key for your voice.
