Preparing For Your 1st Singing Performance

In this blog, we are going to be talking about preparing for your first ever singing performance. Now this is a very scary and nerve-wracking thing to do; the main point is that you have to be practiced and prepared. Practice and preparation is the most important point!!

Now, two months or so before your performance, you must START practice and prepare. Below are the 8 points that you want to check off your list before you perform.

  1. Know your song/songs/vocal parts 110% – yes, 110%. At Vox Singing Academy a hundred percent isn’t good enough you have to know the 110% – that’s the Number one main point and also have to have the vocal confidence in singing every single note that you’re about to sing up on stage. If you don’t have vocal confidence in singing every note, change the note or the key of the song or learning the song 110%.
  2. Start to practice everything from walking up to stage to speaking and interacting with the crowd/ audience – what are you going to say after your first song? After second song, are you going to say anything? You may run your first song into your second song or you may want to speak to the crowd after your first song. You maybe finishing after your first song or after your 10th song so you may want to say your “thank you’s”, prepare and practice this.
  3. Once you’ve got point 2 down, start working on your stage presentation – your movements or what you’re going to be doing up on the stage. Get it down 110%, make sure you’re rehearsing completely with the band (if you have a band or accompanist) or your interaction with the band – work on that and practice this is well so that it looks natural.
  4. Have a dress rehearsal – Yes, what you’re going to wear! What you are going to wear up on stage so that you will be comfortable with what you’re wearing and know what you’re wearing.
  5. Go to the venue – if you possibly can beforehand get acquainted with the venue. Go and see other bands or performances that are there so you know where the backstage is, so you know where the sound booth is, the toilet is,ect. You will feel a lot more comfortable once you have been to the venue the second time.
  6. Before the gig, pack and prepare the day before – pack your clothes, your gig bag, your microphone, lyrics whatever it may be, pack this the day before. You do not want to be rushing around on the day and get to the venue flustered. You want to get to the venue early and you want to be relaxed on the day. Stay relaxed, and get to the venue early, 1 or 2 hours before the show.
  7. Stay hydrated & warm up your voice – drink plenty of water on the day to stay hydrated and to keep the vocal cords lubricated when you sing. 15 minutes or half an hour before the show, warm up, get up on stage and have fun.
  8. Enjoy it & have fun – that’s what it’s all about, if it’s not fun then don’t do it. Make sure that you enjoy everything that you’re doing in life but especially your singing. Because we know how much fun singing is.
