In this blog, we’re going to be taking off from last week’s blog which is the cardinal rule of singing; singing in key or pitch to the best of your ability all of the time. In this blog, I’ll be giving you some specifically designed exercises on training your ear to hear and sing in the correct pitch all of the time.
Let us recap a few things first before we start:
Listen! The main point for you in trying to sing in key to the best of your ability all the time is hear the cords that are being played. – these cords will continually change through the song but generally repeat the same patterns.
Sing along with original artists – sing along with the original artists as you can use them as a guide or backboard about singing in key then go to the backing track or karaoke version of the song and sing along with this in key to the best of your ability. Sing along and focus on staying in key and hearing the cords that are being played in the backing track.
Main point is correct practice, practice and practice – but also doing songs that are already in a good register for your voice that you enjoy and feel comfortable singing. Not if it’s too high or too low change the key of the song or see if there is another version of the song in a higher or lower key or pick a different song that will best suit your voice.
Scales workout! What you want to do is make sure that you can always hear the chords that are being played. To start with and to train your ear. Start by playing random single notes on a keyboard or guitar and try to play and sing this within your range so generally for males between low C and G and for females from low F to High C – so this is the registers you should be playing these notes on piano or guitar. Once you have masted this challenge yourself by playing notes higher in your range and singing this in falsetto Voice.
Once you’re good at playing single notes play the cord. And sing the triad going up 1st, 3 rd, 5th. Don’t worry about what voice you’re singing these notes in, whether it’s true voice or falsetto it really doesn’t matter.
Once you’re good at that, try to do and 1st & 5th or 5th and 1st scale. And then if you wanted to take it to the next level try a 1-3-5-8 arpeggio scale inclining and declining separately and then try it together.
If you mess up don’t worry about it. Focus on the next scale or note or try to go a bit lower or maybe a bit higher where it feels comfortable and always remember try to hit the right notes dead on.
