I want to be a professional singer but I do not know where to start. ..

If you want to be a professional singer but you don’t know where to start – then you need to read this! The first thing that I want you to do is grab a pen and a piece of paper, laptop or your notebook, whatever it is… because you need to write some things down.
Here are the following key points:

1. Write your dream or your goal down – write it in big capital words. Now that you’ve done that, you need to decide what you want to be and what you want to do. So if your decision is to be a professional singer… the question is, do you want to write your own songs? Do you want to do cover songs and play other people’s songs? Do you want to be a solo artist? Do you want to join a band, a group or a theatre company? You need to decide this and write this down and set the wheels in motion today. We need to do it today and not tomorrow because tomorrow is too late. Once you have done that and decided what your goal is, you now have a target to aim for, to shoot for, and to put your energy into.

2. Write down a course of action or your goal and game plan – you need to write these down in bullet points because as we achieve these, we’re going to mark these off. What do you need? What do you need to achieve your dream to become a professional singer? Do you need to find a vocal coach? Do you need to find a band? Do you need to find a songwriting partner and accompanist? Do you need to learn guitar or piano? Do you need to study songwriting compositional or music theory? Do you need to join a theatre group? Do you need to find a mentor? A motivator? A manager? A producer? What do you need to achieve your goal? So start to research, network and taking positive action and steps to achieving your goa

3. After you have done point #2, you need to do this! – You need to wake up every morning and read your dreams and your goals that you wrote down in #1 and then again before going to bed. You also want to carry it around with you in your wallet or your purse and if you have a spare minute or two during the day read it as well.

4 .Start you are working towards, achieving and marking off your steps to achieving your goals – you need to celebrate each bullet point that you mark off and achieve but I want you to quickly move on and focus on the next bullet point and next step in achieving your goal – celebrate everyone, but move on quickly.

5. “If you look, you’ll find” – that’s a great saying… you must put it out there! You have to make contacts, network, research, make phone calls, e.g.. You have to try to find a songwriter, a singing teacher or whatever it is, you got to put it out there, if you put it out there, Doors will start to open where walls only ever appeared.

6. Set you goals and bullet point steps to achieving it, please put time limits to each bullet point. Set a date when you want to achieve this by. This will help you stay focused and motivated you’ll have to work to a deadline. Write the date next to each bullet point and with steely dedication and persistence, set about making each one of these bullet points a reality and mark them off your list.

A couple of points here that you need to consider if you want to become a professional singer:

Love what you do – you’ve got to love doing this, you’ve got to love practicing, you’ve got to love working hard, you’ve got to love singing, song writing or whatever it is; you’ve got to love doing it because if you love doing it, you’ll dedicate a lot of time to achieving your goal, a lot of focus and energy will going to it and you won’t feel like it is a chore. If it is becoming a chore, you need to sit back, re-evaluate and look for another dream or passion. But if your passion or your dream is singing, you’re going to love singing and the hard work and that’s the only way you’re going to be successful.

Believe in yourself – there’s going to be a lot of nay-says out there but you have to believe in yourself.

Work your butt off – you’ve got to practice, you’ve got to study and you’ve got to do whatever it takes within reason to be successful.

Focus on one and one goal only – and give that one goal a 110% of attention, dedication, focus and energy and I guarantee you’ll be successful if you do that!

There is no time for a plan B – plan B is just going to distract you from plan A! So only one goal and one focus.

Put it out there – you have to put it out there and get out there. Put your stuff on YouTube, websites, audition forums, play live, busk, contact booking agents, talent agents, managers, recording companies, producers, recording studios and TV shows … whatever it takes, you’ve got to put it out there, work hard and believe in yourself.
