Practice singing
Practice always makes perfect. The hardest thing about practicing can be starting. Excuses and procrastination get in the way. That’s why you need to make starting practice as easy as possible.
First thing is to make a routine. Set a time and stick to it. Use your calendar, set an alarm.
Set up a permanent space so that when you are inspired to practice you can start straight away. You don’t want to have to set up stands and plug in cables every time you want to practice. You’ll need a mirror, a stereo, a music stand and room temperature water. Also all your class notes and your song book.
Have your set up in a room with curtains, rugs and furniture so that there is very little echo. Bed rooms are good. The reverberation in kitchens and bathrooms although sounding cool, cover up imperfections that we need to be exposed.
Look in the mirror. Watch to see that your mouth is opening correctly, that your posture is strong, that your neck and face is relaxed and that you are breathing from the diaphragm.
Have your stereo at a good volume. Loud enough to get the most from your voice. Your voice should be sitting comfortably just on top of the music. You should be the loudest thing.
Scales get loud so you need to be in a comfortable place where you will not feel self conscious or stifled.
Have your song folder on your stand so that you can read while looking into to mirror. A glass or bottle of room temperature water within arms reach.
Scales regime first. Warming up on The professional Ung scale, jaw Drop and what ever your teacher sets you depending on your voice. When warmed up go in to your most recent and relevant scale. Also rotate though older scales. It’s important to keep those skills fresh. It can help to write a scales roster so that you don’t let any skills get rusty.
Concentrate on what you are doing. It’s better to have good quality practice instead of just running through your scales with out assessment and improvement.
Depending on your level of commitment you can do scales for 15 – 30mins. We are pushing the limits with scales so we don’t want to do to much and wear the voice out.
Always remember to go though songs after your scales and apply the techniques you have been practicing to the song. You can sing between 30 mins and an hour depending on your commitment and endurance. Go through the song once with the lyrics and teachers notes in front of you and once with out. Try to remember what the teacher wrote on the notes. Practice a song with the original recording and with an instrumental version. If your voice is sounding tired, stop. Come back to it tomorrow.
Warm down after your practice with an Ung scale.
