That person that just has it. Those who seem to sing like a bird with out putting any effort, practice or work in to it. I would argue that this is a myth and that any one who can hear, can sing. Only……….% of the population can not hear difference in pitch. If you can tell that one note is higher than another then you can be trained to sing like a pro.
So then who are these freaks that could always sing since they were young with out practice or training?
No such thing. They have been trained and they have practiced. A lot.
Their training started with their parents probably before they were born. With introduction to rhythm and melody through the belly of their mother.
Their grasp on pitch may have been awakened with nursery rhymes sung by parents every day and night.
Their keen sense of rhythm may have been drummed into them when they danced and clapped to the songs played on the lounge room stereo every day.
Most likely they are so confident to sing because they were encouraged to make noise and rewarded for making pleasant sounds with the smiles and soothing words of people around them.
Maybe when the sounds they made were obnoxious or wrong, they weren’t told to shut up, but shown how to make it sound better and congratulated for giving it a go.
Maybe their culture surrounded them with a regular supply of things like tribal drumming and singing hymns or listening and watching a busker every day on the way home from school.
As a child, play is practice. As an adult the same applies. If we can make using our voice a daily routine that is fun or therapeutic then with patience we can also become “a natural”.
There are techniques we can use to speed up the process that can make us natural singers more quickly. A good teacher can show you these techniques.
When we are older we collect all the negative comments, “you can’t sing”, “don’t give up your day job” and let them stand in our way. Let your self learn like a child learned. Though this means practising everyday. Practising your scales and practising your singing. Try to perform as much as possible whether this be in a rehearsal or live situation. I highly recommend trying to play live every 2 to 3 weeks to keep your chops sharp and your nerves controlled. The more that you practice live the easier singing will become and you’ll gradually see your performance anxiety levels drop with your increase vocal conference on stage. Have fun and in time you’ll be one of those natural singers.
